Dear Doug,

Your visit to CVCC for the Visiting Writers Series was a fabulous success. The students, faculty, and administration were extremely pleased with the level of personal and academic engagement that developed from reading your book and learning so much from your experiences. The discussion among the faculty touched on the adventuresome nature of your passion for kayaking and the way in which it relates to your sense of tranquility within the chaos. The romanticism of your exploits adds a dimension of excitement to living that is both powerful and hopeful for our students. Modern life offers many parallels to your experience and your writing obviously resonates with the love of nature, adventure, and inner peace as compatible elements in the natural order of living. I hope that my introduction shared my enthusiasm for your engagement with life’s challenges. Those that heard your experiences may now be inspired to use those insights to better understand true values. Your knowledge was certainly effective in challenging each of us to explore the unknown and achieve happiness by extending the boundaries of living.

Best regards,
